Helicopter and Plane Collide Midair, Pilots Survive

Atlanta 2/20/2012 05:12 PM GMT (WooEB)

A helicopter and small plane collided midair Sunday in northern California, but both pilots walked away relatively unharmed. Police have not identified either pilot.

Federal Aviation Administration officials say the crash involved a Beechcraft Bonanza plane and a Robinson R22 helicopter. The helicopter’s tail snapped off after it clipped the Beechcraft around 7 p.m. about halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco. Both aircrafts landed safely; the Robinson R22 about 8 miles south of Rio Vista Airport and the Beechcraft Bonanza about 20 miles south of Byron Airport.

"Absolutely a best-case scenario, very lucky for everybody involved," said Capt. Brandon Wilson of the Rio Vista Fire Department.

Both pilots were treated for minor injuries. The accident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
